6 Traits of a GREAT Service Franchise Owner

Are you cut out to be a service franchise owner?

Joel Libava, the self-proclaimed “Franchise King,” has a quiz you can take to determine if you have the traits “required” to succeed at franchise ownership.

Yet you undoubtedly already have many of the personality traits that will see you become successful. Take a look below at six traits we feel you probably have that will help you in your franchise ownership journey.

6 Traits of a GREAT Service Franchise Owner:

You need to be OK with rules.

Libava says becoming a franchise owner means you need to be someone who can follow rules and be happy about it. After all, he says, “[i]f franchises didn’t have rules, they wouldn’t be franchises; they’d be independent small businesses.”

Franchises have many rules their franchisees must follow (you will agree to abide by them when you sign the franchise agreement and pay your franchise fee). If you think of yourself more of a “Rules? We don’t need no stinkin’ rules” type of person, franchise ownership may not be for you

You’re motivated by goals.

You’re going to set a lot of goalposts as you move forward. For example, if you purchase a Dryer Vent Wizard franchise you’re going to need to set deadlines/goals for getting trained, setting up a home office in which to work, start your marketing/networking, make your first service calls, train another technician, possibly open up a brick-and-mortar location, and so on. Successful franchise owners tend to be goal- and process oriented.

You take direction well.

In other words, you’re trainable. You enjoy being coached and learning from others. You prefer to not walk off the beaten trail.

You enjoy hard work.

Buying a franchise is easier than starting a business from scratch, but it’s not easy. You’re going to be working far harder than you ever have before, for many more hours a day/week than you ever have before, at least in the beginning.

You have terrific “people skills.”

Yes, you enjoy being around people, but you’re going to need to have the kind of interpersonal skills that allow you to interact successfully with people you love, like and even can barely tolerate when you open a home services franchise. You’re going to use those finely honed skills to create trust, value and even loyalty.

You’re adaptable.

Even with the great processes/procedures and guidance from your franchisor, franchise ownership will see you coming across major challenges and roadblocks. Successful franchisees bend with the wind and make changes as needed. You need to set a course, yes, but success never moves in a perfectly straight line upward. There always are several steps – even falls – backwards.
