The wonderful thing about being your own boss is that it’s your time. The flexibility is one of the things I love most.

Before opening her Mr. Appliance® franchise in 2018, Brittany Schachter spent more than 15 years working in sales and marketing.

She collaborated closely with business owners during that time, and their passion sparked something in her. “It was part of my inspiration for owning a business,” she says. But even with her experience helping entrepreneurs, Brittany had little personal exposure to business ownership herself.

That’s why a franchise model made sense. “If I was going to look at businesses, I wanted something tried and true,” she explains. “Franchises give you systems, resources, and a model that already works. You just follow the steps.”

When Brittany got serious about owning a business, she partnered with a franchise broker who helped her explore options. They narrowed in on home services, but many of the opportunities they reviewed fell outside of Neighborly. Brittany was drawn to brands with longevity, specialty, and a strong support system—and Neighborly stood out immediately.

She attended the Neighborly Reunion in 2018 before officially signing. “I was impressed by everyone I met and by the convention itself,” she recalls. “You could tell they had the experience and infrastructure to support new owners.”

That support has proven invaluable. Brittany points to the rollout of Paradox, Neighborly®‘s recruiting software of choice, as just one example. “I don’t have to think about what resources I need,” she says. “I tell my Neighborly team what challenges I’m facing, and they help me find solutions.”

Today, Brittany speaks with pride about her business and the brand behind it. “We bring a level of professionalism and customer service to this industry that you really can’t get anywhere else,” she says.

But what she’s most proud of is her team. “I have people who genuinely care about doing a great job, and you can’t screen for that when you’re recruiting. I’m so proud of the team I’ve created.”

The early days of ownership came with challenges, but Brittany stayed focused. She believed in the business model, the brand values, and the long-term impact of delivering great service to her community. Slow, steady growth—hiring the right people and expanding her territory—became her strategy. And it has worked for her.

For Brittany, one of the greatest benefits of franchising is flexibility. “The wonderful thing about being your own boss is that it’s your time,” she says. As a mom, that matters deeply. Once she built a trusted team, she gained the freedom to be present for her children—picking them up from school, taking them to activities, and working from home when needed.

Even during a recent hurricane, when schools were closed for four days, her business continued running smoothly. “The flexibility is one of the things I love most,” she says.
