When Jim and Fran Schimmenti look back at their ten-year journey with The Grounds Guys®, one word rises above the rest: lifesaver.

What began in a moment of fear transformed into a decade of growth, stability, and deep friendships that they still treasure today.

Their story started at one of the most difficult moments a family can face. “You have three children at home, and your husband comes home and tells you he lost his job,” Fran recalls. “It’s terrifying.”

But Jim saw a possibility where others might see panic. “Stop crying,” he told her that day. “This is the best day of our lives. We’re going to get on a plane, go to Waco, buy this franchise, and we’re going to make this work.”

And that’s exactly what they did.

Neither Jim nor Fran had formal business training — and that made the structure and support of a franchise system essential. “Not having business knowledge, the franchise gave us the capability, help, and accountability to grow faster than we ever could have on our own,” Fran says.

They quickly learned that business ownership isn’t easy. “We fought like crazy on some things,” Jim laughs. But every decision — right or wrong — was theirs, and that ownership mattered.

Within a few years, their hard work changed their lives. “We were able to provide our children with an education. We gave our oldest daughter a beautiful wedding. And now we’re expecting our first grandchild,” Fran says with emotion.

“We’ve built amazing friendships,” Jim says. “They’re all part of our family.” During tough times, it was the other franchise owners who listened, encouraged, challenged, and guided them. Many had been through similar struggles and were always ready to help the next owner up the ladder.

“There are a few people I rely on heavily,” Jim shares. “Without them, I wouldn’t have made it to year ten.”

That sense of belonging extended to Fran as well. “I had never run a business before,” she says. “The other franchisees shared their administrative knowledge, their assistants, their ideas — everything. They always had our back.”
